Lem is first perusing the school, seeing the layout, classrooms on each side. He finds all the flavors of school present. scrawlings of "jimmy loves jenny" and "Steve was here." each classroom seems designed for a different task. He finds various clues that the place has been possibly lived in. corners built up for warmth, the smell of feces in a part of the building, various sounds that have yet gone unexplained.
